Company History

Walsun Insurance Limited, former known as The Tai Ping Insurance Company, was founded in 1929 by Mr. H. C. Tung and Mr. H. N. Ting in Shanghai with the support of other solicited investments from six China banks. Shortly afterwards, Taiping's business grew rapidly. Before the outbreak of Sino-Japanese War in 1937, nineteen branches bloomed in major cities of China and in the South East Asian countries as well as over four hundred liaison offices throughout China. In addition, agencies were established to serve in Europe and America. In view of such outstanding performances, Taiping was recognized and approved to become the first Chinese member company by Shanghai Insurance Association, of which only foreign insurers were eligible for membership.

As a result of the Sino-Japanese War and subsequently, the Civil War, the financial and insurance market in China suffered, Taiping inevitably shared the same misfortune. In 1950, after the evacuation from Mainland China with the Central Government of Republic of China, Mr. Tung consulted with Chiao Tung Bank (formerly known as Bank of Communications), our only original bank shareholder in Taiwan, to recapitalize Taiping for resumed operations in Taiwan.

As the senior in the Taiwan insurance industry, Taiping always promotes its spirit of "Faith and Sincerity" and provides the clients with quality services. In an effort of coping with the liberalization of insurance industry and the customer oriented market trends, Taiping has made each and every endeavor to improve underwriting and claim handling, providing the service with highest level of professionalism.

Premium income of 2006 has reached NT$2,604,408,226. The number of staffs increased to 443. There are sixteen departments in the Head Office and field offices, including six branches and fourteen liaison offices, spread around the island to enhance customer service level.

We have turned to a new page of the insurance industry in year 2007, with the approval of the governing party, Tai Ping has officially changed itˇs legal identity to Walsun Insurance Limited.

With a view to further upgrading the customer service and administration functions, the network is being reinforced together with on-line EDP operations.  In order to comply with the requirement of the revised insurance regulation and to meet the demand of capital found increase as the business grows, the Company is going to increase its capital in the coming years. Hoping that the Company's basis for future development can thus be strengthened and solidified.

Tai Ping Insurance Industry Research And

    Development Foundation

Insurance is a society related service industry. To operate, an insurance company should first emphasize the fulfilling of social obligations. In addition to gathering funds for providing insurance protection to enterprises, families and individuals, another basic element of an insurance company's operation is to provide funds for promoting social well-being and to reciprocate society for what was taken.

To act in accordance with this idea and by making an effort to strengthen the insurance industry, our Company had contributed NT$4,000,000 for the establishment of the Tai Ping Insurance Research and Development Foundation on December 29, 1977.

To promote education, the Foundation had contributed funds to the Taipei Underwriters' Club for compiling a Dictionary for Property Insurance Terms which helps to avoid differences in definitions of foreign insurance terms and protect the interest of the insurance public. The Foundation has also provided scholarships to students studying insurance in universities and post-graduate schools. Support was also given to other academic research works. It is hoped that by supporting more skillful personnel, the insurance industry can be strengthened for the future. As such, it will not only help to secure professional services to the insurance public but also strengthen the social security and further growth of the nation's economy.

In order to assist in the insurance education to fully meet the needs of the insurance industry, to help the general public's proper understanding of insurance, and to provide the public with better quality services, our company shall continue to expand the foundation and make use of it more effectively for various goals.
